Consultation and Editing
Clients provide me a drafted obituary at least 24 hours prior to a scheduled zoom or phone meeting. We will discuss the draft together. I’ll offer strategies and language to ensure the obituary is most reflective of your loved one. Once you’ve revised the draft, I provide a final edit of the obituary. $100 is paid as a deposit, and $100 is paid upon delivery of the final obituary. I do not work with drafts generated by artificial intelligence (AI). Many newspaper outlets and quick google options may lead you to an AI generator for obituary writing; it is apparent to writers when they are asked to review/revise AI generated content. If you find yourself relying on an AI generator, my full obituary writing service (described below) will be a better option for you.
Obituary Writing After a Recent Death
This is my most commonly requested service. I write a complete, edited obituary, composed in consultation with you, to memorialize someone who has died. I provide:
- an initial phone or zoom meeting
- up to two informational interviews with family members or friends
- a draft sent to you for review
- one additional consultation (if needed/desired) once the obituary is drafted
- one major revision (addition of up to 200 words)
- a final line edit (checking for grammar)
My rate for this service begins at $450; this fee covers the production of a draft within three business days. If you have immediate need (within 24 hours for a draft), my fee begins at $550. Obituary Writing as Preparation for Dying and Reflection on Life
This service is the most involved I presently offer. The individual being memorialized may, if they desire, participate in the creation– at any scale– of their obituary. This service covers an initial phone or zoom consultation with the individual contracting with me– whether they are dying or caring for someone who is, or if they would like to support writing their obituary as a reflection practice. This service includes up to four informational interviews with family members or friends, a draft sent to you for review, an additional consult (if needed/desired), up to two major revisions, and one final edit. $750-$1000 Contact me here: Service Request.
Long-Form Legacy Project
